“Some places in the world you just want to be away from everything, it’s nice to not have any people. Wadi Rum isn’t like that at all – it’s as much about the people here as it is about the actual desert.” – Rob Durran

Shifting Sands is the third episode released in a six-part film series called Elemental Journeys, commissioned by PERTEX.

The film tells the story of the friendship between the Bedouin community and climber Rob Durran. It is set among into the sandstone towers (or ‘jebels’) of Wadi Rum, Jordan, and peers into thousands of years of climbing history.

British climber Rob Durran is one of the most active climbers to visit Wadi Rum in Jordan over the past 15 years. The Bedouin have hosted him on each of his trips, and in Shifting Sands he reveals the delights of climbing with these ‘honourable, proud nomads’. He teamed up with Abdallah Al Zalabeh, the founder of Jordan’s first climbing club, and together they travel to a remote corner of the desert to rediscover and climb an old Bedouin hunting route.

Rob said: ‘It has been an honour to stay with the Bedouin people. In an area steeped in climbing history, returning to Jebel Suwebit was extra special as we discovered a whole host of scrambling and climbing routes, including putting up a new route on a remote desert crag. It has been great watching these young climbers combine their natural climbing skills with modern climbing practice in the hope that sustainable eco-tourism will help to continue to develop this part of Wadi Rum for generations to come.’
