2016 Arc’teryx King of Dolomites crowned

The King of Dolomites is a freeride photography competition that attracts professional and amateur photographers to the Italian town of San Martino di Castrozza for two days of shooting in the mountains.

It was the fifth edition of the competition and this year attracted eight professional photographers, 40 hobby photographers and more than 100 riders, who took to the slopes of the area once again to be inspired by the amazing scenery.

There are seven main categories and a diverse jury sat together for six hours to pick the winners. The intensive discussion was shaped by the distinct backgrounds of the judges merging high level sports, photography, artistic and cinematographic expertise. Freerider Stian Hagen from Norway, mountain and outdoor photographer Piotr Drożdż from Poland, and director of photography Maxime Alexandre from Italy adjudicated the photos based on athletic performance, riders’ style, emotions, scenic beauty of the Dolomitic context, composition and lighting.

Norwegian Sverre Hjørnevik won the Pro Action and Landscape category. Christoph Oberschneider took the best photo in the Pro Alpinism. The Wannabe (amateur) winner Action and Landscape was awarded to Stephan Kothner, the best Wannabe Alpinism was shot by Andrea Costa. The crown for the overall category KOD 2016 Line in which amateurs and pros were competing together went to Klaus Polzer.
