Congratulations are in order to the first Nepali women ever to climb K2. The 2014 seven summit international K2 EXPD team successfully summited Mount K2 with 19 climbers. Also to Claire Oziem who has became the first woman to run from John O’Groat’s to Lands End unsupported, pushing her trolley/buggy over 1000 miles.
A quick update from an expedition currently in progress is that of runner Kevin Carr who set off from England in July 2013 in an attempt to become the fastest person ever to circumnavigate the globe – a distance of over 18,000 miles. In the past year, Kevin has run across England, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, The Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey. He is currently in New Zealand and, with a year of the run complete, he estimates another seven months before he will arrive back in the UK.
Swimmer Lewis Pugh is planning a big challenge to undertake long distance swims in each of the Seven Seas. These include the Mediterranean, Adriatic, Aegean, Black, Red, Arabian and the North Sea. Pugh remains the only person to have completed a long distance swim in every ocean of the world.
Challenge number 11 of Expedition 1000 begins for Dave Cornthwaite. The British man will travel 1600 miles around the entire Swedish coastline in a solo Hobie (pedal-powered) kayak. The first time Cornthwaite will sit in a Hobie Kayak will be when the journey begins. And a challenge which kicked off this week, is that of adventurer Sean Conway who begins a 1000 mile run down the length of Britain, solo and unsupported, from John O’ Groats to Land’s End.
Finally, this year’s Mongol Derby is underway, with 47 riders from all over the world saddling up and attempting to ride a 621-mile circuit of the Mongolian steppe in under ten days, in an epic route that is modelled on the horse relay postal system.
