Mike Horn is at it again. The 48 year old will embark on a motorless circumnavigation of the earth via the two poles this September. The first leg will see him sail from Monaco to South Africa before heading to Antarctica where he will ski 3,600 miles across the continent, and get collected on the other side by his boat, the Pangaea. He will repeat this process by sailing to Alaska’s Bering Strait, then sail, ski and kayak until he reaches Greenland where he’ll board the Pangaea and sail back to the starting point.
Laura and Tim Moss have carved another notch in their bedpost, having reached their target destination: Melbourne, Australia. They left London on August 18th, cycled across Europe, the Middle East, India and South East Asia before arriving in Melbourne after 363 days, cycling 10,000 miles in just under a year. They continue their journey into New Zealand and the United States in September. Sarah Outen has also completed another leg of her journey, in her attempt to cross the world by kayak, bike and ocean rowboat. Outen and Justine Curgenven kayaked along the Aleutian Islands in Alaska in 101 days. The 29-year-old is resting up for the week before continuing her expedition by bike from Homer in Alaska on the next leg of her London2London challenge.
Adventurer Grant Rawlinson has embarked on his latest expedition, The Peak to Peak 2014. Rawlinson and Alan Silva are currently taking on Ben Nevis in the U.K, cycling 2000km, kayaking 30km across the English Channel, and remounting their bikes in France until they reach Mt. Blanc which they will then traverse on foot. He and Alan will complete the expedition while on annual leave from work, showing the masses what can be done in a short space of time.
An 11 year old is set to become the youngest person to run a marathon in all seven continents. Nikolas Toocheck will run the Chenaii Trail Marathon in India in September securing his place in the record books. The youth has been in pursuit of this goal since 2012, and has called it Running the World for Children.
In other news, the Nepali government is to increase insurance coverage of the Everest Sherpas and other Himalayan peaks as a direct result of the April 18 tragedy on Everest. The Sherpas will see an increase in benefits from $10,000 to $15,000 for each guide come September, this in turn means higher fees for the climbers.
And finally, the third Buxton Adventure Festival (BAF) takes place on 11th and 12th October this year, at the Pavilion Arts Centre in Buxton. There are some awesome speakers in the line up, including Lance Armstrong’s personal masseur Emma O’Reilly, climbers Tim Emmett and Shauna Coxsey, fell runner Steve Birkinshaw, and Paralympic Silver Medalist Karen Darke. Activities, workshops, shows and film screenings will also be available for your entertainment. Get your tickets here.
