A Winter Cycling Journey on Lake Baikal

‘I can’t explain precisely why I like cold and snowy landscapes. I think it’s partly because of the aesthetics and the ambience, where the snow muffles the sounds and spreads light. These landscapes are seemingly calm and unchanging, and I find them very soothing.’ —Gaëlle Bojko

In early 2020, Gaëlle Bojko cycled solo around Lake Baikal, riding and camping on the frozen surface of the world’s largest freshwater lake for a month, carrying everything she needed to endure the harsh conditions in her panniers. Her new film, Whiteout, documents her journey through the serene white landscape, and explores her powerful connection with the cold.

‘I loved the atmosphere of these snow-covered landscapes,’ Gaëlle recalls. ‘The sounds, the light, the apparent steadiness. I believe that when you’re enjoying yourself and the place you’re in, and as long as you’re not going against your limits – the elements, the distance, or your physical abilities – you can really have a great time. There will be low moments that you haven’t planned for, and those will make you grow. But overall, you will enjoy yourself, and perhaps discover a little more about yourself too.’

Gaëlle’s hope is that viewers will realise that many things are possible, despite what you might be told. Whether it’s a first ride around your local area or months spent crossing continents, there is a beginning to everything – and every beginning is a jump into the unknown. ‘The unknown is scary and unpredictable,’ Gaëlle says, ‘but we are tougher than we think we are. If an idea comes to our mind, then we’re able to do it. There will probably be pain and tough times but they will make us stronger, and ready for the next adventure.’

‘I’ve struggled with my body and my image a lot. I’m still not always at peace with it, but going on the adventures made me realise how strong I can be. I’m only a tiny, tiny drop in a huge ocean but I hope that the content I share will reach at least one soul who will find some inspiration in it – for whatever reason it might be.’ —Gaëlle Bojko
