BIKING

The recipe for a successful bike holiday? Five gondolas offering bike transport, 400km of trails, and a good dose of incredible mountain scenery. Add in numerous singletrack trails, downhill trails, pump and freeride tracks, as well as mountain huts, and you have the perfect combination. Enthusiasts come to take on the BIG-5 Bike Challenge that links five gondolas in and around Saalbach Hinterglemm and Leogang. It’s an epic day tour that explores the region’s most beautiful scenery while testing the stamina and skills of mountain bikers. But don’t worry, lifts take you on a comfortable ascent up the mountain (of course, you can ride if you prefer!). Even with the support of the gondolas, this tour requires a full day.

In Saalbach Hinterglemm, along with neighbouring Leogang, there are also freeride trails at their best in the bike parks. There are plenty of places to rent e-bikes too.

MOUNTAIN HUTS

The numerous restaurants and 40 mountain huts in and around Saalbach Hinterglemm are one of the region’s great advantages. These cosy, atmospheric places provide a varied and delicious menu that includes traditional dishes from the local Pinzgauer kitchen such as Pinzgauer Kasnocken (dumplings with cheese and onion), the classic Speckknödel, and ribs. The local delicacy is Pinzgauer Bladl, a dish made with a batter of rye and wheat, fried in hot oil and then filled with sauerkraut, potato salad or fried potatoes. The principal focus in all the huts is on regional produce. They’re also great places to stop for a drink and enjoy the magnificent views.
