Washington State
Sidetracked Uncovered
Written by Daniel Neilson // Photography by John Summerton
From the rivers of Yakima to the peaks of the North Cascades, Washington is defined by people who live for its landscapes. Trail runners, bikers, paddlers, guides – across Washington we met people whose lives revolve around the state’s protected areas.
Our introduction to Washington came near Yakima with ultrarunner Shannon Mahre, who took us along the Tieton River towards the foothills of Mount Rainier. From there the journey unfolded through the people who know these landscapes best – paddling the coastline at Semiahmoo with Tori Ayres of Dragonfly Kayak Tours, riding Galbraith Mountain’s famed singletrack with Ike Bancroft, and standing on Slate Peak in the North Cascades looking across the Pasayten Wilderness.
