Sidetracked Live: The Creators TourEvents
A look back at Sidetracked’s first live tour with 10 evenings of exploration, films, photography, and fantastic craft beer, in partnership with Craghoppers.
‘What a great tour, a credit to you all. I’ve done a lot of outdoor film events, but this topped the lot. It really felt meaningful’
In October 2021, the Sidetracked team toured the UK in the first-ever Sidetracked Creators Tour, sponsored by Craghoppers. Hosted by Sidetracked’s Deputy Editor, adventurer Jenny Tough, our inaugural event took the magazine to live audiences in taprooms across the country, bringing the community together over 10 nights in 10 different cities.
Getting together for a night of storytelling, good beer, and delicious food is something many of us have been longing for. We wanted to create an intimate and lively experience focused on storytelling and adventure, with each event inspiring people to seek out the undiscovered and forge a different path. We also wanted to keep it local by supporting independent taprooms and food suppliers, from hand-rolled bao buns in Leeds to botanical spirits distilled on the Cornish coastline.
The tour headlined with some of the most inspiring creative adventurers in the outdoor sphere. From Ian Finch in Bristol to Amira Patel in Manchester to Mike Guest in Edinburgh, each speaker shared stories about their experiences in our wild places. ‘I absolutely loved being a part of the tour,’ said adventurer Sal Montgomery. ‘I’m looking forward to working with you more over the coming months.’
To celebrate seven years of storytelling, our Director of Photography, Martin Hartley, hand-picked a selection of some of the best photography from the Sidetracked magazine archives to feature in a photography exhibition. A curation of 20 images, including work from Kelvin Trautman and Cat Vinton (some of which are available to purchase as limited-edition fine-art prints), were on display for attendees to enjoy during quiet moments with a cold beer.
We also featured a series of short films produced by Sam Needham, Krystle Wright, and Goh Iromoto, all of which linked to Sidetracked’s core of creative storytelling. Here’s a small taster of some of the films that we screened:
Esivi by Shyla Lee
Mirna Valerio: Par For The Course by Kody Kohlman
Chasing Monsters by Krystle Wright
Nocturne by Ted Simpson
Exit Point by Tim Howell
The Ripple Effect by Mike Guest
Bloom by Ben Cox
To give attendees a look behind the scenes at Sidetracked, we hosted an ‘Ask Me Anything’ session with Sidetracked founder John Summerton and adventurer Jenny Tough.
In support of the tour’s charity partner, Trash Free Trails, we set up a raffle with prizes from Craghoppers, Yeti, komoot, Adventurous Ink, Good Hemp, Dayebreak Coffee, a limited-edition print from the photography exhibition, a Sidetracked subscription, and back copies of the magazine. The raffle raised over £1,600 for Trash Free Trails and the Sidetracked Adventure Fund, an annual grant set up to support individuals and groups with a unique approach to exploration. Each attendee also received a free goody bag on arrival.
British Outdoor clothing brand Craghoppers sponsored the tour. Gill Russell, PR Manager at Craghoppers, said: ‘We have been delighted to be involved. It’s been a fantastic series of events that everyone has loved.’
We have been humbled by the feedback from people who attended the tour. A long-standing Sidetracked reader told us: ‘This event summed up exactly what the magazine is all about: storytelling and adventure.’ Another added: ‘I loved the informal and intimate format for the evening. Inspiring and nicely put together. Thank you!’
One woman, who had brought a friend who was suffering from severe stress that day, said: ‘By the end of the evening, she said she wanted to do more things like that mid-week to make her feel alive and remind her not to always prioritise work. So job done, I reckon?’
In October 2022, the Sidetracked Creators Tour will be back, reaching more cities across the UK and bringing new speakers and, of course, great taprooms. To find out when tickets go on sale, register your interest here.
