Surf Cafe Living
In Pursuit of Outdoor Dreams
“In a way, sometimes I think it’s more that we chose not to continue living our previous lifestyle. We both worked in corporate environments, with intense roles and long commutes. We just decided we didn’t want that life any more. Once we made that decision we asked ourselves ‘if we don’t want this, what do we want?’ The answer was simple. For us it was always all about the outdoors – living somewhere that we could access hikes, surf, bike trips and anything else that involves enjoying nature. We didn’t want it to be that once a week treat on our day off. We chased it to be part of our every day lives and, thankfully, the risk was worth it.” – Jane Lamberth
Surf Café Living encapsulates all that is great about coastal living; early morning surfs, community yoga, sensational sunsets, gloriously messy beach barbecues, outside gatherings and candlelit dinners, the fresh sea air and the sand between your toes. It is a million miles away from the rat-race lifestyle many of us have to contend with. Anyone, they prove, can make a change.
“I don’t think a day passes where I don’t at some point hit the beach. That is what I love most about being here. There is always time. I love the feeling of the sand, love the fresh air and the scenery. It helps me unwind after work, let go of any issues. Just being by the ocean energises me. I love it. The energy of the waves.”
Surf Café Living is the couple’s second book and follows Jane and Myles’ have transformation of a rundown 100-year old cottage into a ‘country meets beach’ house, and the book is teeming with design inspiration, tips and ideas, alongside 50 mouth-watering recipes and suggestions for making the most of outdoor living. From building your own firepit, to the perfect outdoor shower, to keeping chickens and harvesting herbs.
“The most surprising thing has been living in a village surrounded by like-minded people. Everyone is on a different journey but we all support each other and take time to get to know each other. That’s been a really magical part of living here in Sligo. It’s good for the soul,” says Jane.
“We both feel we’ve achieved so much and really stayed true to our dreams.
It’s quite amazing and sometimes we can’t believe how lucky we are. We live in this new village with such amazing scenery, great surf, brilliant friends; we didn’t expect any of that. We have grown so much. We still travel and surf, it can be easy to lose who you are in any project or job. So you have to work at keeping your heart’s desires in sight.”
